Side Events

Our side events provide themed panel discussions on some of the biggest fundamental challenges in humanitarian aid. This year the events will cover Wash, Food & Shelter

According to the United Nations World Water Development Report, between 2011 and 2050, the world population is expected to increase by 33% to 9.3 billion people and the food demand will rise by 60% in the same period. An estimated 663 million people lack ready access to improved sources of drinking water while a third of the world’s population – some 2.4 billion – do not use improved sanitation facilities.

Hence, ensuring the supply of water to the world population is a big challenge. Still, there are many opportunities amid finding solutions to irrigation and treatment, decentralising storage of water and cutting leakages.

WASH Side Event will showcase the most vital sanitation and purification techniques and discuss the challenges faced in the field.

An unprecedented 65.5 million people around the world have been forced from home, including 22.5 million refugees, over half of whom are under the age of eighteen. There are also 10 million stateless people restricted from access to basic rights, education, healthcare, employment and freedom of movement.

Shelter Side Event will discuss shelter solutions which significantly reduce vulnerability and build communities resilience.

While today there are approximately 7.3 billion people in the planet, this number is likely to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, according to UN estimates. Challenges such as deforestation, logistics, climate change, transportation and storage are examples of many issues to be addressed by all stakeholders in the industry. In addition, the agricultural sector alone will also demand long-term private investment and public spending. On the other hand poverty and hunger still remain as one of the biggest challenges of our era.

Food Side Events will showcase the latest developments from providers of emergency food supplies and nutritional products.
